VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
Medical/Dental/Optical Sessions: CCMP member physicians, dentists and optometrists donate blocks of time to see patients referred by CCMP’s benefit program, all on a free-of-charge basis. CCMP medical advocates coordinate closely with the health care professionals and benefit recipients, following a diagnostic and treatment plan from start to finish. Advocates facilitate scheduling, confirmation, transportation, also arranging for interpreters as needed.
Medical Advocacy: CCMP offers training programs for volunteers who want to become CCMP certified medical advocates, working side-by-side with low-income workers and health care professionals to take a planned, step-by-step approach to resolving benefit requests. The medical advocate first gathers data regarding the individual’s health concerns, history of the problem, insurance coverage, attempts at getting care, and other socioeconomic factors affecting one’s health. This approach helps CCMP gain an understanding of the material obstacles and political realities of low-income workers in our community, which is the first step to attacking the root of the problem. CCMP teaches committed and concerned volunteers how to organize the participation of businesses, labs, doctors, and ancillary health services to obtain the resources an individual needs to achieve better health. Advocates coordinate follow-up between volunteer professionals and the recipient. Advocates also aid insured benefit recipients in how to gain Medi-Cal or private insurance authorization of services and in locating a medical, dental or optical practice that will accept their insurance when they have been unable to do so on their own.
Community Outreach: Learn how to meet and sign up community residents interested in playing a role in making CCMP’s free and voluntary programs possible. Help enlist the participation of medical professionals new to volunteering with CCMP’s free-of-charge preventive medical, dental and optical care benefit programs. Gain experience in public speaking or conducting information tables at venues throughout the community -- outside stores, at community events or college campuses, upon invitation of churches, temples or clubs. Join teams telephoning to contact those that sign up to further CCMP’s campaign for comprehensive medical care.
Publications and Design: CCMP needs volunteers to help produce our association newsletter Vital Signs, our Sponsors Guide and literature – key to publicizing current activities along with news and analysis from the perspective of CCMP members fighting for access to comprehensive health care for low-income workers. CCMP publications and literature convey how volunteers can do something about the problems of lack of access to health care and promote ways to build a foundation of good health, including patient education. Volunteers assist with article writing, photography, photo editing, desktop design and proofreading.
Office Work & Mailings: Volunteers receive training in how to represent CCMP in answering the office phone, greeting members and others at the reception desk. Volunteers assemble update letters and CCMP publications, readying for mail-out. Teams telephone CCMP members and those who signed up for more information, update the association mailing list and assist with filing and other responsibilities coordinated from our administrative office.
Transportation: Volunteers are needed to provide rides for volunteer advocates and benefit recipients to donated appointments with professionals or to other CCMP activities; and to drive to pick up supplies contributed by CCMP members including supportive businesses, individuals and institutions.
Translation: Bi-lingual volunteers are needed to serve as interpreters for benefit recipients with CCMP advocates, CCMP health care professionals or public agencies. Language skills most frequently needed include Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese.
